| Can't Take Our Love Away | |||
| Artwork | |||
| I made this cover art before I had a Songfight upload account, so I had just e-mailed it to the sitemasters in an attempt to get it used, but I think my lack of using-the-right-methods wound up in its rejection. Also... it's not that good. Listen to the "Can't Take Our Love Away." | |||
| Massive Intelligence Failure | |||
| Artwork | |||
| I recruited my friend Ayumi for this cover art. I thought it would have a decent chance at winning, but it wasn't selected. This was the first time I'd worked with someone modeling for me. Damn, it's so hard to get someone to do what's in your head. Listen to "Massive Intelligence Failure." | |||
| New Sex | |||
| Artwork | |||
| My idea was to emulate some sort of form where one of the options was a new sex. Unfortunately, this cover art didn't clearly indicate what the title was. That was probably one of the reasons it wasn't selected. In fact, the cover art selected wasn't even officially submitted. That saddened me a little. Listen to "New Sex." | |||
| ABCD Puppies | |||
| Artwork | |||
| This is my first submitted cover art that actually got chosen as the representative art. It may have been because nobody else submitted art for this song title, but I'd like to think that it was chosen on its quality. Listen to "ABC Puppies." | |||
| Block City | |||
| Artwork | |||
| It took my a lot of Google Image Searching to find the right source to use for this one. I considered making a "Welcome to Block City" city-limit sign, but I couldn't find a Lego Town picture from the right point of view. I eventually gave up and used this idea instead. I think it came out pretty awesome. There was no competition for this title's cover art, so mine was chosen. Hurray! Listen to the "Block City." | |||
| I Wish I Was So Sure | |||
| Artwork | |||
| My first idea was to take the logo of a Sure stick of deodorant and then splice it together with other logos and signs to form the title, but I woke up too late to go scavenging about the city for words, so I just settled on a dialogue between anti-perspirants. Fortunately, the campus convenience store had the brands I wanted in stock. I set up my photo shoot there. It was going up against one other submitted cover art (which wasn't that good, imho). Mine was chosen. Listen to "I Wish I Was So Sure." | |||
| Glass Eye | |||
| Artwork | |||
| I think that "Glass Eye" is my biggest Song Fight success. At first I wanted to use a window in an eye, but I think my chosen source picture conveyed the concept of glass a little more clearly. The other two cover art submissions were both good. And mine was chosen! I was very enthused when I found out. Listen to "Glass Eye." | |||
| Naked on the Meach | |||
| Artwork | |||
| Only one other person came up with anything close to my idea on this one. Upon hearing the title, almost anyone's first reaction is, "What's a meach‽" My first idea was to make a "meach" the opposite of a "beach": snow instead of sand, lava instead of water, bathing suits on the parts of bodies not normally covered by bathing suits and vice-verse, etc. However, I thought of the phrase "Meaches on beaches" and decided to go with the Seussian route. I used both Sneetches and some other small critter of Seuss's creation as source images, hand-drawing my Meach and then eventually scanning it in. I made a small coloring error, but it's fortunately not that obvious. Listen to "Naked on the Meach." | |||
| Sarah Vowell's Motto | |||
| Artwork | |||
| It took me forever to find a decent quality Wheel of Fortune image to edit. Actually, I couldn't find any. I had to download several WoF clips in RealPlayer and then take an opportune screen-cap. I skipped several of my classes working on this, but, in the end, I suppose it was worth it; I'm very proud of the final result. Listen to "Sarah Vowell's Motto." | |||
| Systematic Panic | |||
| Artwork | |||
| This, to date, has been the most involved Song Fight cover art I've done. I knew that I wanted to have somebody in costume chasing people, maybe with arrows on the floor directing them in which way to panic. I asked Amizzle about possibly renting a costume from Boston University Stage Troupe, since I wouldn't have been able to afford to purchase one. She suggested that someone wear the vest she owned which matched our friend Jess's hat. Unfortunately, Amizzle was too busy with BUST to appear in the photo shoot (also, incidentally, the largest, in terms of number of people, I've ever done). My art was chosen. Listen to "Systematic Panic." | |||
| Hiss and Hearse | |||
| Artwork | |||
| If you've looked in my Photoshops section, the style to this piece should seem a little familiar; I took the idea I used in "Gabaclone": I pasted the object pieces on an iTunes-visualizer screencap background and then pasted miniaturized copies of the final image onto itself in various ways. Here I went for a spiral to imitate the idea of a curled snake. Bortwein also submitted art for this fight, and we both happened to use the same model hearse. It's almost as if we rehearsed it or something. Listen to "Hiss and Hearse." | |||
| Baseball vs. Opera | |||
| Artwork | |||
| I spent many hours working on this one. The primary time-consumer was photoshopping the original source image from the video game Bloody Roar to give myself a blank arena to place the combatants. I accidentally screwed up while uploading this to the Song Fight website, so I re-uploaded it correctly. My cover art was not chosen, and this was the first time since "New Sex" that I'd lost an art fight. I was pretty disappointed, but I keep telling myself that the fightmasters saw that my first art submission was empty and then, upon seeing my second submission later, accidentally thought that they had already looked at it. This assumption makes me feel a little better about losing. Listen to "Baseball vs. Opera." | |||
| I Meant to Remember | |||
| Artwork | |||
| From the responses I heard about this cover art, I succeeded in what I was trying to do. I was aiming for delayed comprehension, and it does seem to take most people a few seconds to get the wit in it. I won't say more, since I don't want to spoil the realization. Listen to "I Meant to Remember." | |||
| High Enough | |||
| Artwork | |||
| I had trouble making the smoke layer look right on this one. I was aiming for general pot-smoke swirls, but it came out more as just a layer of low contrast. However (probably due to lack of competition this week), it was chosen. Listen to "High Enough." | |||
| Chance | |||
| Artwork | |||
| This marked my long-awaited return to the world of Song Fight cover art. I'd been busy getting back into the swing of things after moving to Kansas and then immediately falling to the wrath of several flu-like diseases in a row. I thought about taking a slightly more pornographic route. (There is a notable gay porn star named Chance.) However, I went with this since I figured it would have a better chance of being chosen. Listen to "Chance." | |||
| Bioluminescence | |||
| Artwork | |||
| I seem to go on winning streaks of having my work chosen. I was kind of going on a "biohazard" interpretation here, admittedly, but I felt I still tied in the title successfully. Random fact: the human figure was actually constructed from a photograph of a naked woman walking. Listen to "Bioluminescence." | |||
| All Skate | |||
| Artwork | |||
| Until now, every single one of my cover art submissions has been a stand-alone piece. I wanted to tie one into a previous piece, and this one matched up perfectly with the prior title "Red Skates." So I made this cover art as homage to Chris Onstad's (author and artist of the webcomic Achewood) art for "Red Skates". Listen to "All Skate." | |||
| Red Robot | |||
| Artwork | |||
| I'm sure many of you out there are familiar with the character of Red Robot, who was first created by Sam Brown for the webcomic Exploding Dog and is now a regular pixelated character on the webcomic Diesel Sweeties. This was a very old fight on Song Fight, but I made cover art for it retroactively, doing my own take on the infamous character who wishes to crush all humans. Listen to "Red Robot." | |||
| Obey All the Laws | |||
| Artwork | |||
| The sign originally warned drivers about dust storms. My only other ideas for this title were scenes with a character saying the title. I think I've done enough of those for a while. Listen to "Obey All the Laws." | |||
| Method of Delivery | |||
| Artwork | |||
| My original idea was to have package-delivery people surrounding a woman giving birth. Unfortunately, I was unable to find an over-the-top image of a delivery in progress. Heck, a screen cap from any sitcom would have done. Instead, I had to settle on taking something from a baby delivery gallery. The photoshopping on this art was half-assed, I admit, but my main objective was the idea. I'm kind of glad I didn't spend too long on it, though, since it wasn't chosen (probably because it may have been a little too disturbing). Thanks again to Shenja for helping me make the tracking lines to make a rectangular image appear square! Listen to "Method of Delivery." | |||
| Come a Hellin' | |||
| Artwork | |||
| I'm putting this up on my own website before the deadline for votes on this title on Song Fight. So, although I can say that my art was chosen (possibly due to lack of competition again), I do not have a link available for you to listen to this title's songs. I finally got an opportunity to reference my previous cover art my including Red Robot (from "Red Robot") and Naked Seuss Girl (from "Naked on the Meach"). | |||
